Emergency contraception is a method used after intercourse to prevent a pregnancy
There are 2 types of emergency pill or an IUCD.
A medical and sexual history is usually required to assess risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections
Levonorgesterol 1500mcgs ‘Levonelle’ can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex
Ulipristal 30mgs ‘EllaOne’ can be taken up to 5 days after unprotected sex.
Latest research suggests that emergency pills only work if taken before ovulation has occurred (when an egg is released from the ovaries) If taken after ovulation it is not effective at stopping a pregnancy.
Emergency Copper IUD is the best method of emergency contraception 99% effective.
Can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex or up to 5 days after the predicted date the women would ovulate.
Can be left in as an on-going method of contraception or removed after the next period.
