Genital Warts

Viral infection – Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)

  • There are over 100 HPV viruses
  • Virus types 6 & 11 cause genital warts
  • Spread by skin to skin genital contact and vaginal, anal and oral sex, sharing of sex toys
  • Over 80% of the population will be infected with the HPV at sometime in their life
  • Like other viruses (for example a cold virus) the virus enters the body, the body makes antibodies against the virus and over a period of time the body gets rid of the virus. With the HPV virus this can take up to 2 years.
  • This means that doing nothing about genital warts is an option as they are not of medical significance
  • However it is understandable that it can be very distressing for anyone who has genital warts and most people would prefer to do something to remove them

Can I get online testing and treatment?

We do not offer online testing as there is no current accurate online test available. However, you can send us a photo for diagnosis.

Online treatment is available – this is a topical cream that is applied directly onto the warts. Several applications may be required over 4 weeks. If this is not effective you may be recommended to visit a GUM clinic where other treatments may be available- cryotherapy ( freezing)

Genital warts are more commonly seen when someone is ‘run down’ as their immune system is under pressure.

Women who get genital warts during pregnancy can get quite significant numbers of warts. This is because their body is under pressure to support a developing baby and their own body. It is important not to be too embarrassed to tell the health professional/midwife/obstetrician looking after you during pregnancy if you have genital warts. On rare occasions further medical care may be required in these circumstances

Extra Information

HPV 16 & 18 are responsible for 70% of pre-cancerous changes/invasive cancer of the cervix in women in the UK

In Sept 2008 a vaccine was introduced for HPV 16 & 18 viruses to all girls age 12-13 years as a prevention against cervical cancer,

Since Sept 2012 the vaccine also includes protection against HPV viruses 6 & 11 which cause genital warts.

Therefore these young women should be protected against developing genital warts as they become sexually active so cases of genital warts in this and future women should be significantly reduced as well as abnormal smear results

As young men are not currently vaccinated against HPV they will still be susceptible to genital warts and this will be more common in men having sex with men (MSM)
